Prior to the 19th century, men relied on leather water buckets and brute strength to fight fires.
In 1831, a hand-pumped engine replaced manual labor and the Concord Engine Company was born. Life remained the same until the turn of the century.
Our volunteer fire department underwent major changes in 1903. The
town unanimously voted to build its first fire station, to be constructed on this site at the cost of $7,000.
Horses were stabled here, later moving to Tuttle's Livery across the street.

In 1910, the town purchased its first motorized equipment. Town officials enjoyed boasting that "No home in Concord is over twelve minutes from the station."
In the 1960s, Central Fire Station was sold to Tom Healy, a long time resident, who transformed the building into Healy’s Package Store. It occupied the entire first floor for more than twenty-five years.
A new era began in 1986 as "Walden Station" opened and quickly became a favorite dining spot for local residents. Renamed "Walden Grille" in 1996, we are in our third decade of serving our loyal customers.
Today, in the proud tradition of this historic site, we are honored to serve you!
Welcome to Walden Grille and enjoy the
relaxed atmosphere of Concord's First Firehouse.
